The fourteenth meeting of the series of specialized meetings in the field of Rural Planning and Development with the title of Sustainable Management of Natural Resources

The Public Relations Department of the Natural Disasters Research Center reported that the fourteenth session of the specialized series of meetings in the field of rural planning and development titled "Sustainable Natural Resource Management" was held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, by the Natural Disasters Research Center and UNESCO Chair on Disaster Management, with the presence of over 350 specialists and enthusiasts in this field.

Vahid Jafariyan, Deputy Director of International Center for Integrated Management of Watershed and Bio-Resources in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions (ICIMWB)began his speech on approaches to combating land degradation in sustainable natural resource management. He emphasized that the first victim of unbalanced development is the land, and if not managed properly, returning to the original conditions will be impossible. He identified improper water and soil management as one of the most significant current challenges and highlighted the type of perspective of stakeholders and lack of awareness as other challenges in natural resource management in Iran. Jafariyan also mentioned that land degradation leads to increased instability and crises, resulting in poverty, food insecurity, hunger, and reduced biodiversity. In the final part of his speech, he deemed changing the governance system and eliminating organizational destructive processes through the participation of all entities essential for success in this area.

Afshin Danekar, a faculty member at the University of Tehran, initiated his remarks on novel approaches in sustainable natural resource management, stating that natural resources can lead to sustainability in economic, ecological, cultural, and social domains. He considered the relationship between natural resources and the environment based on an ecosystem-based planning approach. Danekar emphasized that the shift towards ecosystem services results in economic value and sustainability, while noting that cultural and supportive services in natural resources have received less attention. He believed that without guidance and interaction between people and nature, natural resource management would be futile, stressing the need to focus on five factors in sustainable management: people, organizations, financial resources, ecosystems, and technology. Danekar highlighted the necessity of forging organizational linkages and paying attention to realities in sustainable natural resource management and outlined strategies for overcoming existing challenges, contingent on balanced and coordinated development activities, climate-compatible actions in all sectors, managing the consequences of development, and involving the local community.

Mohammad Darvish, head of the Environmental Committee at the UNESCO Social Health Chair, began his remarks by criticizing the perspective that policymakers in natural resources and the environment should respond to livelihood needs, considering it a mistake. He added that misguided policies have placed Iran on a list of countries with the highest rate of land subsidence. Darvish emphasized that improper resource management has led to numerous natural and biological hazards and that the satisfaction index in our country's biological sector is not favorable. He further emphasized the necessity of interaction between policymakers and environmental actors and the involvement of the environment as the foundation of development, not the focus of development. He also considered the approval of the food security document as desirable and emphasized that everyone should strive to realize its policies.
